Endangered Chinese mergansers spotted wintering in Gucheng, Hubei Province

Dozens of Chinese mergansers are seen swimming freely at the Nanhe National Nature Reserve in Gucheng County, Hubei Province. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Chinese mergansers have migrated here for the winter. The Chinese merganser, nicknamed "living fossils with wings," is sporadically distributed in China and under first-grade state protection. It is also listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. (Photo: Hubei Daily/Li Tao)
